Heatsink W4254 does not fit in my dimension 8400

I've been having thermal shutdowns so I purchased a new fan and heatsink for my Dimension 8400. When I went to install the new heatsink the base was too large to fit the retention bracket.

I need advice: should I return the heatsink and buy another? Or should I buy a new retention bracket and what type of bracket do I need?

My cpu is a Intel Pentium 4 540 Socket 775.

This is the heatsink I purchased:

Hi M4Assault,

I can think of no reason why the Dell heatsink shouldn't work. Did you try removing the sticky pad and adding some thermal paste and reinstalling it?

Yes I have replaced thermal paste twice since having the dimension 8400.

The base of the new heatsink is too wide to fit in the bracket.  I compared it to my original heatsink and the base is larger.

Heatsink Dell P/N W4254 is the correct part and should be compatible with the Dimension 8400.

Maybe you were shipped the wrong heatsink, have you contact the seller about this?

The Dimension 8400 motherboard retention bracket is a Dell proprietary part and there is no retail equivalent available.

I was thinking that myself about the wrong heatsink Bev.  I will contact them today. What's the chances my 8400 shipped with the wrong heatsink?

M4Assault

I very much doubt that happened.
